Thousands of people will visit this website curious about how we help them overcome their fear of speaking in public. The sad part is most of them will never buy our system for eliminating their fear of speaking. Why? The price?
No the biggest reason is the fear that the “cure” will be as painful as the fear of speaking itself.
I have surveyed audiences who were attending my three day seminar in communication and presentation skills. Over the past 30 years I asked them how great their fear of speaking in public was. I started by asking them to raise their hand if they had a fear of speaking. Guess what, very few people raised their hand. At first I was confused because I knew how universal a fear of speaking in public was. Over 75% of all people have a fear of speaking in public. Were my attendees different than everyone else? No, they were so afraid of speaking in public that they feared that if they admitted it publicly that I would bring them on stage to “help” them overcome it. My solution was to hand out cards and let people write on the card how afraid of speaking they were. I told them to mark a 10 if speaking in public was their greatest fear and put down a zero or 1 if they actually enjoyed public speaking.
Suddenly when they could answer anonymously the results matched the 75% number that many studies have confirmed.
The Most Important Factor in Helping People Eliminate Their Fear of Speaking
Since I overcame my discomfort or fear of speaking in front of others I have learned several techniques to help my students eliminate their fear. The most important factor in deciding which techniques to use was they had to be fun and or easy. If the technique caused the person to experience fear then I knew they wouldn’t start or finish the process. My graduate school professor helped me and other students eliminate all and I do mean all of our speaking problems and we had fun doing it. I can tell you there was no fear while eliminating my fear of speaking.
